You can change the cast, but there's one thing that will never change
- the zaniness and daring of Mel Brooks. THE PRODUCERS is a
hilarious musical full of sophisticated humor, breath-taking costumes
and scenery, and laughs aplenty. Lewis J. Stadlen as the outrageous
Max Bialystock and Don Stephenson as the timid Leo Bloom do a
fine job in their attempt to produce a flop play. "Springtime for
Hitler" could only be the workings of Brooks' demonic cleverness.
Dances with walkers, insults to every minority group known to man,
a visual tribute to Germany via long-legged actresses wearing
superbly silly outfits, and rhythm birds make this play within a play
an absolute hoot. Actually it's a hoot within a hoot. Go and enjoy!
