What on earth could be funny about menopause? Night sweats,
added pounds, memory loss, mood swings? It all sounds pretty
gruesome to me. But, put in the able hands of Jeanie Linders (book
& lyrics), MENOPAUSE The Musical becomes an absolute, one-of-a-kind
gem.
She takes our favorite baby-boomer songs, like "Don't
Make Me Over" and "Help Me Rhonda," and parodies them into
hilarious "Please Make Me Over" and "Help Me Doctor" versions.
All in all there are 28 songs, and each one is more clever than the last.
Then she comes up with four delightful ladies - Lynn Eldredge, Joy
Lynn Matthews, Carolann Page, and Sally Ann Swarm - to present
them with comic perfection and impressive voices. Choreographer
Patty Bender adds charmingly clunky dances, and sets by Jesse
Poleshuck depict an array of Bloomingdale's departments. The
production goes by all too quickly; you won't want to say goodbye to
these women.
Fortunately, CD's, "I'm Changing" tee-shirts, hot-flash
fans, and wild woman pins are available as souvenirs of this
evolutionary event. With 100+ shows under its ample belt,
MENOPAUSE The Musical is a winner that proves change can be
fun.
