Richard Abrons' WHOSE FAMILY VALUES! presents a well-rounded
perspective of the right-to-life/right-to-choice conflict. He
does this by taking one middle-class Missouri couple (Glynis Bell
and Herbert Rubens) preparing for the wedding of their youngest
son (Kevin Rolston); into this he interjects a rebellious son (Chris
Hutchison), a delightful housekeeper (Gammy L. Singer), two
potential daughters-in-law (Rosalyn Coleman, Jennifer Laine), and
a violent stranger. Clayton LeBouef rounds out this impressive cast
as a detective investigating a possible crime.
Within four short acts, Abrons manages to introduce multi-faceted
characters and present their points of view, as well as their internal
moral struggles. And underlying all of the dissension are the knots of
family ties. Gentle humor and verbal soliloquies that manage not to
sound "preachy" interchange, and Director Philip Rose keeps the
pace brisk. Despite an ending that's a little too easily resolved,
WHOSE FAMILY VALUES! is an honest, unbiased portrayal of a
dilemma that clearly divides our country and probably will for many
years to come.
