It's difficult not to use the word "enchanted" when talking about
Matthew Barber's ENCHANTED APRIL. The entire production
is wrapped in mystical, magical transformations that captivate you
from beginning to end. Even the set design by Tony Straiges gets a
round of applause as drab and dreary London in Act I is
revolutionized into a sunny garden on the Italian coast in Act II.
Spurred on by the prophetic, outspoken and slightly ditzy Lotty
Wilton (Jayne Atkinson), three unlikely cohorts - Jane Adams as
the wistfully timid Rose Arnott, Dagmara Dominczyk as the lovely
yet lonely Lady Caroline Bramble, and Elizabeth Ashley as the
marvelously droll Mrs. Graves - rent a villa in Italy for the month of
April. Throw into this mismatched group a few spouses (Michael
Cumpsty, Daniel Gerroll), the villa's owner (Michael Hayden) and
its spunky servant (the hilarious Patricia Conolly who doesn't speak
a word of English), and the possibilities are limitless. Romances
abruptly end and begin, marriages are reconciled, a grumpy old lady
becomes a matchmaker, and the villa continues to weave its spell.
ENCHANTED APRIL is a delightful evening of theatre that will
both amuse and enthuse.
