Since their inception in 2001, Studio 42 has produced varied and original works such as the one-man, all lip-synched KLYTAEMNESTRA’S UNMENTIONABLES, the fairy tale LOVE/SAD and the clever homage to retired subway cars, REDBIRD. Now, for the second time, Studio 42 has joined ranks with TheaterMania! to host the party of the summer, the second annual STARVING ARTISTS BALL.
With the most ambitious goal of seeking out an emerging artist or company on whom to bestow a cash grant from the growing Starving Artist Award Fund (established in August of last year), the industrious members of Studio 42 came up with the idea to throw an annual charity fundraiser extraordinaire. In creating the STARVING ARTISTS BALL, the company has invented yet another event to be seen at in New York. Instead of waiting for success to come calling, they have pursued it with tenacity, surely, but with the creativity and artistry that will guarantee these young talents a place at the grown folks table for good.
The first Ball, held just last year, had a massive turnout. In true downtown fashion, it was a hip, funky, yet trendily formal event that, while not going off without a hitch, certainly managed to bring a hearty slice of the NY arts community together. In fact, it was, very early into the evening, a standing room only affair. This year’s fete offers keynote speakers Frederick Weller of Broadway’s Tony-winning TAKE ME OUT, as well as both Stephanie D’Abruzzo and John Tartaglia of Broadway’s AVENUE Q. Of equal importance will be the formal unveiling of the Starving Artist Award, which has been designed and donated by sculptor Jonathan Adler.
Perhaps not the place for top hat and tails, but certainly suited for your most fabulous evening outfit, the 2003 STARVING ARTISTS BALL is one New York City event that is not only charitable, but fashionable too. The Ball is sponsored by Tanqueray, Anheuser Busch, Gotham Magazine and Ensig Printing.
